A Case of Intramedullary Spinal Paragonimiasis

Abstract
A 37-year old female with previous symptoms of meningitis developed progressive paraplegia over a period of 2 months.
The neurological examination and myelographic findings along with the case history suggested a preoperative diagnosis of multiple or wide-spread spinal arachnoiditis with complete adhesive blockage below the level of the Ll cord segment.
On exploratory laminectomy an intramedullary abscess, the first seen here, was found. Measuring 4X0.5 cm, it contained yellow-brown pus and a worm.
The abscess cavity was thoroughly irrigated using normal saline and the wound was. closed primarily. Postoperatively the patient¢¥s paraplegic condition immediately improved.
The histopathological study of these specimens confirmed the presence of Paragonimus Westermani and its products.
